Millions of Canadians are about to find extra money in their bank accounts — and most don’t even know it’s coming.
On June 5, 2026 — that’s this Friday — the Canada Revenue Agency will automatically deposit a one-time payment directly into the accounts of more than 12 million eligible Canadians. No application needed. No forms to fill out.
How Much Are We Talking?
The amounts depend on your family situation:
• Single adult: up to $267• Couple with two children: up to $533• Larger families: up to $717
This is part of the transition to the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which replaces the old GST/HST credit system starting July 2026.
Do You Qualify?
You receive the payment automatically if you meet two conditions: you filed your 2024 tax return, and you were entitled to receive the GST/HST credit payment in January 2026.
Simple as that.
How Is The Amount Calculated?
The CRA takes your total annual GST/HST credit entitlement for the July 2025 to June 2026 period and multiplies it by 50%. So if your annual credit was $400, your deposit will be $200.
One Thing To Watch Out For
Some Canadians may receive a smaller amount than expected — or miss the payment entirely — because of outstanding CRA debt, income changes, or eligibility issues. Check your CRA My Account to confirm everything is in order before Friday.
What Happens After June?
Starting July 2026, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit replaces the GST/HST credit entirely, with quarterly payments 25% higher than before for the next five years. So this isn’t just a one-time thing — it’s the start of bigger ongoing payments.
Check your bank account Friday morning. The money will be there.
